K.S.Chitra Biography


K.S.Chitra, a playback singer of South Indian and Hindi films has won the heart of millions with her mellifluous voice. She has lent her voice to over 11,000 songs in languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali and Oriya. In the history of South Indian film playback singing she is the first female singer who was awarded for being the best playback singer by all the four state governments of southern India.

K.S.Chitra was born in Thiruvananthapuram, capital of Kerala. She received her initial training in music under the guidance of her father, late Krishnan Nair, a reputed singer and composer. She graduated in music and later passed her Masters in music from Kerala University under the supervision of Professor K.Omanakutty.

The famous music director of the Malayalam film industry - M.G. Radhakrishnan - gave K.S.Chitra her first break in the film 'Attahaasam' and later in 'Snehapoorvam Meera', and 'Njaan Ekananu'. The famous Tamil composer Illyaraja introduced her into Tamil film industry through the film 'Nee Thaanaa Antha Kuyil'.

In Hindi film music she has won the hearts of music lovers in the films 'Love', 'Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya', 'Virasat','Aks', 'Ashoka', 'Rangeela' etc. Her album 'Piya Basanti' in collaboration with sarangi maestro Ustad Sultan Khan was very popular. In her next album 'Sunset Point', she sang with renowned ghazal singers Gulzar and Bhupinder. She had the honor of working with famous music directors like Salil Choudhary, Anu Malik, Nadeem-Shravan and A R Rahman.

K.S.Chitra was felicited with the National Award five times in the category of the best playback singer for the films ' Sindhu Bhairavi' (Tamil, 1986),' Nakhashatangal' (Malayalam, 1987), ' Vaishali' (Malayalam, 1989), Minsara Kanavu (Tamil, 1996), and Virasat (Hindi, 1997).
