Maryland is located in the Mid-Atlantic region. In addition to Pennsylvania to the north, Delaware, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, it shares borders with Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. to the south and west. Maryland is the eighth-smallest state by land area, covering 12,407 square miles in total.

Baltimore is the largest city in the state, and Annapolis serves as its capital. Some of its sporadic nicknames include Chesapeake Bay State, the Free State, and Old Line State. Henrietta Maria, then known as Mary, was born in France and reigned as the monarch of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The location bears her name in her honor. Several Native American tribes, primarily Algonquian peoples, but also Iroquoian and Siouan tribes to a lesser extent, lived in Maryland before European explorers began to explore its coastline in the 16th century.

History

With his younger brother the Honorable Leonard Calvert serving as Maryland's first provincial governor, Lord Baltimore's first settlers made their way to the new colony in March 1634. Following Calvert's passing in April 1632, his son Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, received the charter for "Maryland Colony" on June 20 of that same year.

The State of Maryland proclaimed its independence on May 29, 1854, renaming itself Maryland in Liberia and designating Harper as its capital. The Republic of Maryland was another name for it. It controlled the coastal property between the Grand Cess and San Pedro rivers. As an independent state, it existed for three years.

Culture

Due to its geographical location, Maryland has a culture that is a fusion of southern and northern America. Colonial influences can still be seen in the cities, particularly in architecture. Maryland has made great efforts to preserve its numerous stunning natural parks. Major tourist destinations Dans Mountain Wildlife Management Area and Assateague Island National Seashore are held in high regard by the locals.

Language

Spanish is spoken in a few isolated areas along the Washington, DC-Baltimore corridor, but English is the language that is most commonly heard. Only English is spoken at home by 87.4% of people, while Spanish is spoken at home by 4.7% of people.

Geography

Seagrass-dotted dunes in the east, low marshes teeming with wildlife and massive bald cypresses near the Chesapeake Bay, gently rolling hills of oak forests in the Piedmont Region, and pine groves in the Maryland mountains to the west are just a few examples of the diverse landscape. Hoye Crest on Backbone Mountain, located in the southwest corner of Garrett County, close to the West Virginia border and the headwaters of the North Branch of the Potomac River, is the highest point in Maryland and has an elevation of 3,360 feet.
