History

The history of Texas dates back to the arrival of Native American tribes, who settled in the region over 10,000 years ago. Spanish pioneers came to the region in the 16th century, succeeded by French colonists in the 17th century. The area was the territory of the Spanish settlement of New Spain in the eighteenth century, and after Mexico gained independence from Spain at the beginning of the nineteenth century, it became a province of Mexico.

Texas claimed independence from Mexico in the year 1836 and established the Republic of Texas. In 1845, the United States conquered Texas, and shortly thereafter, during the American Civil War, Texas separated from the Federation and rejoined the Confederate States of America. Texas was mostly an agricultural state after the Civil War until the early twentieth century when oil was discovered.
