St John's Church, Kolkata

The St. John's Church of Kolkata is one among the first public buildings that were constructed by the East India Company. St. John's Church was constructed in the year 1787. This church is popular as 'The Stone Church'. St. John's Church is located at BBD Bagh in Kolkata, West Bengal.

The St. John's Church of Kolkata is the first Anglican Church of India. All Anglican Churches maintain the code of conduct as stated by the Church of England. It has been designed in the style of London's popular St. Martin-in-the-Fields church which is said to be the most beautiful church in the world. The beautiful blend of steeple and portico having columns has become the model of colonial church architecture with time. The Grecian architectural characteristics are truly reflected in the internal works of St. John's Church of Kolkata.

Inside this massive St. John's Church of Kolkata, there is the altar, and also several rare portraits of late archbishops of Canterbury. The core attraction is however a notable painting of 'The Last Supper' by the famous German painter Johann Zoffani.

There is a cemetery inside St. John's Church. There lies the graveyards of Job Charnock, the founder of Kolkata, Admiral Watson and Julius Imhoff and many others.

During Christmas, the church becomes a center of extreme festivity.
