Surat is located on the southern bank of Tapi River in Gujarat. It is well-connected to all parts of India. Surat has attracted merchants and traders due to its seaports from ancient times. A tourist delight, Surat is home to finely carved mosques, Parsi agiaries, European tombs and colonial houses. This city is commonly known as the city of flyovers due to the presence of a large number of flyovers.

Surat is one of the most prosperous cities of the country. After the decline of the textile industry of Mumbai and Ahmedabad in the 1970's, Surat has become the major city in the textile industry in the country. Surat is also called as the DREAM (Diamond Research And Mercantile) city as it is a major hub of Diamond cutting and polishing in India. It is commonly known as the commercial centre of textile and diamonds.

Surat also has remarkable archeological sites. It is the third cleanest city in India, according to the Indian Ministry of Urban Development. This city also comes on the list of twenty Indian cities which are selected to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission. Also, Surat is the first smart IT city in India which is being constituted by the Microsoft CityNext Initiative. The initiative is tied up with IT services majors Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro.

How to reach:



By Air: Surat has its own airport named Surat International Airport. The airport is situated around 12 kilometres away from the centre of the city. Surat has direct flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad etc.

By Rail: Surat is well-connected to many parts of the country through the Indian railways. It is one of the most important junctions in the state of Gujarat. It is extremely accessible to western and northern parts of India. Double-decker train connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad also passes through Surat. Eastern and Southern parts can also be easily accessed from Surat through Rail.

By Road: The city is well-connected to National Highway 8 through a 16 kilometre connector highway. One can easily take private buses or local buses to reach this city. Cabs can also be hired to reach Surat.
