Secunderabad founded as a British cantonment in 1806 is one of the largest cantonments in the country and has a sizable military presence. Parts of the city are also under the jurisdiction of the Secunderabad Cantonment Board. The Cantonment Board has its office in the north of the city.
The city is connected to Hyderabad through the Mahatma Gandhi road, earlier called James Street. This road is one of the busiest roads in the city and has a number of shopping areas. There are also many hotels and restaurants around this area such as Hotel Asrani International, Percy's, Monty's, Park Lane, Mandarian Room, and Taj Mahal.
Secunderabad is an important junction on the South Central Railway line and is its zonal headquarters. The rail line passes in the south of the city. The city is also the hub of the inter city road transport. The Andhra Pradesh State Transport Corporation ( APSRTC) has a bus depot near the rail line, off the main M G Road. The Jubilee bus depot in the north of the city is the other main bus depot.
Important Landmarks in the City
Secunderabad has a sizable Anglo Indian population and a cosmopolitan culture. Some of the landmarks of the city are heritage buildings of the British time and built in the colonial style.
One of the oldest hospitals in the city, The Gandhi Hospital, earlier known as the King Edward Memorial Hospital is located in the south of the city near the railway station. The hospital was built in 1851.
The Secunderabad railway station, one of the largest in the city is also located in the south. The railway station, built in 1874, is the hub of rail travel to the area as over 190 trains arrive and depart from it daily.
