Indian Institute of Technology BHU

Introduction

IIT (BHU) Varanasi is among India's leading public engineering institutions and is situated in Uttar Pradesh in the northern region of the country. It was set up in 1919 when it was part of the coveted Banaras Hindu University. Three sections of BHU, namely, College of Technology, College of Mining & Metallurgy, and Banaras Engineering College, were merged to form the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU) in 1971. It was much later in 2012 that the institution was given the status of an Indian Institute of Technology. The transformation was made possible by incorporation of The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2012.

IIT (BHU) has a co-educational and residential campus inside the larger BHU campus spread over an area of 1,300 acres near the Ganges riverside. Its establishment is closely linked with the Banaras Hindu University. Over the years, these institutes have paved way for pursuing advanced courses in various disciplines of engineering.

It was in 2003 that MHRD Committee advised conversion of the IT-BHU to an Indian Institute of Technology. The Government published a press release on this in 2008 and the process was completed by 2012. The HRD ministry's proposal to turn IT-BHU into an IIT was approved by the BHU Executive Council. However, administrative and academic ties to the BHU were retained.

The current director of the IIT (BHU) Varanasi is Prof. Rajeev Sangal.
