Indian Institute of Technology Patna


Introduction

The Indian Institute of Technology, Patna (IITP) is among the newer IITs created by Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. Located in Patna, it is rated as an institute of national importance. It is also included in the National Knowledge Network, which serves as a resource for knowledge-related institutions meant for uniting scientific community. It is now functioning from Patna's Patliputra Colony, out of a transit campus. This is not far from both Patna's Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan Airport and railway station. The upcoming permanent campus of the IITP is located at Bihta, about 35 km from Patna city. It is likely to become operational from 2014.

The campus of the IITP is divided into blocks. The Academic Block has buildings equipped with audio-visual gadgets and modern labs. It also has fast internet connectivity, apart from cafeteria, administrative office, and central library. The institute's Science Block has labs and classrooms for departments like Math, Chemistry and Physics. The Mechanical Engineering Block houses all labs related to Mechanical Engineering.

The director of the IITP is Prof. Anil K. Bhowmick. He has several academic achievements to his credit, including previous association with eminent institutes like London School of Polymer Technology and University of Akron, Ohio.

To get admission to any of these undergraduate courses, applicants have to clear the Joint Entrance Examination post completion of 10+2 years of schooling. The courses are imparted over eight six-month semesters.

Postgraduate courses

In last year, the institute commenced its M.Tech. program. It offers postgraduate degrees in:

As a matter of fact, IIT Patna is the first ever IIT to kick start an M. Tech. course in Nanotechnology. To get admission to the M.Tech. courses, students have to clear the GATE entrance test.

Ph.D. Programs of IIT Patna

From 2009, IITP is offering qualified students the provision to pursue Ph.D. programs. As it is, the IITP has a number of labs to enable students carry out research in engineering and applied sciences disciplines. In 2009, the Sponsored Research and Industrial Relations Unit was established to facilitate interaction between sponsoring agencies and the institute faculty. The IITP also offers support for interdisciplinary research, involving two departments, or more if required.

Examination Schedule in IIT Patna

For admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses, the IITP adheres to timing of JEE and GATE exams. Notification of IITP's M.Tech, programs are published in leading newspapers and updated on its website as well. The institute publishes notifications for Ph.D. programs two times every year.

Placement Cell in IIT Patna

Like other IITs, the IITP also has an active Training and Placement Cell. It aids students in getting placements in top MNCs, research facilities, academic entities, etc. Ever year, the cell arranges for summer internships for students in their final year. It also aids students to get into suitable jobs. In 2013, some students of IITP made it to global MNCs like Microsoft IDC.

Awards of IIT Patna

IIT Patna is still in a nascent stage but several students of the institute have achieved feats worth mentioning. Some of the students are already pursuing research in eminent universities abroad. It has joined hands with international institutes of eminence such as University Of Hartford, University of Houston, National University of Singapore, University of New South Wales, etc. These tie-ups will provide students of IITP with resources and options to develop research skills as well as shine in their respective areas of specializations.

IITP has got grants from agencies like Department of Biotechnology, Department of Information Technology, and Department of Science and Technology, all of which belong to the Government of India.

Campus life in IIT Patna

IIT Patna has one girls' and four boys' hostels. The hostels are in close proximity to academic complex and have aesthetic landscaping. Facilities like high-speed wireless Internet and healthcare are also provided to the students of the IITP. To aid the students relax and stay healthy, table tennis facilities and a gym have been set up. A gymkhana is being constructed with provisions for yoga room, dance hall and badminton court.

The IITP students enjoy an eclectic and vibrant ambience in the campus. Apart from academics, they get exposure to cultural activities and events that help them relax and encourage bonding with peers. The HoSCA or House of Socio-Cultural Affairs in IITP endorses cultural events and activities during various times of the year. The freshers' welcome party is called Nebula at the IITP. National events and important occasions like Independence Day, Teacher's Day and Diwali are celebrated with much gusto by the students.

The yearly techno-cultural festival of IITP is Anwesha, which combines artist and band performances with socio-cultural events. Its annual technical fest, named CELESTA, is held to encourage engineers of tomorrow to showcase their innovations and skills. The IITP students also take part in a number of sports activities across the year.
