National Institute of Technology, Silchar

National Institute of Technology Silchar also known as NIT Silchar is an Institute of National Importance that was set up in the year 1967. Formerly called the Regional Engineering College Silchar or REC, Silchar, NIT Silchar is located on river Barak banks. The campus of NIT Silchar sprawls across an area of 600 acres and is located at the border of Silchar.

In year 2002, this institute of technical education in India was recognized as a deemed university and also converted from a Regional Engineering College (REC) to the National Institute of Technology, Silchar. National Institute of Technology Silchar is the result of the joint venture of the Assam Government and the Government of India. The Government of India has also recognized as one of the Centres of Excellence.

The objective of this residential institution, NITS, is to produce talented and skilled manpower inculcated with technical skills, leadership, social character, innovation, social values etc that would help in development of the country and the mankind. The institute also promotes and facilitates research.

The unique feature of this technical and engineering institute has been the undertaking of diverse developmental programs which are optimistic in outlook and aims at modernizing the laboratories, library automation and computing facilities etc. the use of improved teaching aids helps the students to reach high standards which are the need of the present changing business scenario.
