Indian Council of Social Science Research

The government of India established the Indian Council of Social Research (ICSSR) in 1969. The body was established with the principle aim to promote research in the field of social sciences in our country. It supports 27 ICSSR research institutions.

Objectives of Indian Council of Social Science Research
  • Review and re-examine the developments of the research in the area of Social Sciences
  • Administer fellowships and scholarships for research
  • Sponsor various research programs in Social Science and provide grants and financial support to interested individuals and institutions.
  • Adopt measures to promote research on the neglected areas of Social Sciences.
  • Provide guidance and technical training for research.
  • Organize and finance seminars, study groups and workshops
  • Undertake and assist in publication of books and journals in Social Sciences
The present Chairman of ICSSR is Prof. Javeed Alam and the Member Secretary is Dr. Ranjit Sinha

Indian Council of Social Science Research provides various kinds of fellowships for the promotion of research in the field of social sciences. These fellowships can be categorized under the following categories.

Council of ICSSR

Council means the “governing council of ICSSR, which has the power of highest decision making. It comprises 26 members which includes the chairman and the member secretary. The Government of India nominates the Chairman along with 18 social scientists. Further there are 6 members from the government of India which includes members from the Departments of Education, Social Welfare and Finance.

ICSSR has two important committees namely the Policy, Planning and Administration Committee (PPAC) which looks after the rules, regulations, plans, policies, financial and administration affairs of the council of ICSSR. The other committee is the Research Committee (RS) which looks after everything related to research commencing from scrutinizing the grants sanctions to different research proposals.

Publication is an important tool for promoting research programs. ICSSR maintains an extensive programme in publication. The Council has published many books, journals, monographs and pamphlets based on the different programmes undertaken by the Council from time to time.
