Madurai University

Madurai, a city shrouded in history and housing some of the world's magnificent temples is also a center of academic excellence. Madurai University or Madurai Kamraj University, a premier institute offering quality education is one of the best in the country. The institute was christened after Kamraj, one of Tamil Nadu's erudite scholars.

Madurai University, an extension of the University of Madras was officially inaugurated on 6th February 1966. The university is strategically located in the city's epicenter amidst sprawling acres and boasts of several accolades. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently accorded the status of "University with Potential for Excellence" to Madurai University, one of the nine distinguished recipients of this honorable status.

Madurai University's motto is " To seek truth is knowledge" is exemplified by the universities emphasis of providing a comprehensive all round education.

The university comprises of 18 Schools with 72 Departments and a well-endowed library stocking multiple copies of coveted reference books. In addition it has 109 affiliated Colleges of which 9 are autonomous and 7 evening colleges. The institute also has centers to train the faculty, extension activities concerning the Department of Youth Welfare, NSS, SC/ST cell and Adult Education programs while the University's Directorate of Distance Education has recorded a student strength of about 1.30 lakhs

The affiliated institutes follow a regular Credit based semester system where students are given the option of choosing their preferred subjects. The Distance Education Department however follows a different system.
