North Eastern Hill University

The North Eastern Hill University was established on July 19th 1973 by an “Act of Parliament”. The university aims at disseminating and advancing knowledge by offering instructions and necessary research facilities in different fields of learning. Moreover the university also pays attention to the social, intellectual, academic, cultural and economic development besides welfare of the people from the hilly regions of North East India.

Initially North Eastern Hill University had jurisdiction over the states of Meghalya, Nagaland and the union territories of Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. But with the formation of the Nagaland University and Mizoram University, NEHU lost its jurisdiction from these two.

North Eastern Hill University has 8 academic schools which are lead by the respective deans of the schools. There are various departments in each of the schools and some of the schools also house some academic centres. These schools of NEHU are listed below.

The other facilities and the services provided by the North Eastern Hill University includes Bio-Informatics center, Computer center, health center, publication cell, Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility (SAIF), University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC), NEHU Data & Voice Network Facility (NDVN), Guest house, convention hall etc. Besides these, one of the prominent features of the university is the library and its huge collection. The library of NEHU is a finest university library in the North East of India. It has an assortment of more than 2.3 lakhs books, journals, periodicals and other documents. The library is also equipped with computers and other electronic devices like the audio-visual equipments etc. UGC has selected the university as a “University with Potential for Excellence”, following which the library has taken the initiative to offer services through re-organization, optimization of resources, launching innovative services, etc.
