Barmer


Barmer is a beautiful desert city, located at a distance of about 157 kilometers Jaisalmer, 222 km from Jodhpur and 588 km from Jaipur and is easily accessible from these cities. It is the headquarters of the Barmer district of Rajasthan and is a quaint settlement of cheerful and earnest people.

It is believed that the city of Barmer derives its name from Bhada Rao, also called Bar Rao, the city's founder. Barmer means the hilly fortress of Bar. The city is believed to have been established in the 13th century. The arid land and extreme climatic conditions have not broken the spirit of the people who carry on a hearty lifestyle, undaunted. The sprightly dances and lively music traditions of the state have been kept alive in the city of Barmer.

The rich tradition of arts and handicraft making has been kept alive by the people of this township. The artisans of the city are famous for creating beautiful carved wooden items, excellent pots and vases, exquisite and embroidered carpets and rugs and dyed and hand printed textiles of vivid colors. Sadar bazaar is famous for its sequined and embroidered ghagras and other traditional dresses.

The main attractions of the city are

  • The temples of the town are famous pilgrimage spots. A visit to barmer is incomplete without a trip to the famous Kiradu Temple, Khed Temple, Nakoda Temple, Viratramata Temple, Jogmaya Temple and Balark Temple.

  • The fort of Barmer is the site of historic episodes and exudes an aura of tradition and heritage.
The fairs and festivals held in and around Barmer are a major attraction and tourists plan their trips to coincide with these. The Tilwara Cattle Fair, Barmer Thar Festival, the Veeratara Mela, the Khed mela and the Nakoda Parasvanath are among the important fairs and festivals held in and around the city. A number of good RTDC and private hotels make your stay at Barmer a pleasurable one.
