Dungarpur Rivers

Dungarpur Rivers include the two majestic rivers, which are famous by the names of Mahi river and the Som river. These two Dungarpur Rivers, namely Mahi river and the Som river, are also considered as two of the most sacred rivers in that region. Right at the confluence of the two Dungarpur Rivers, that is, Som and Mahi rivers, the much popular Baneshwar Temple is situated which is blessed with three of the Shivlingas.

On the full moon night, in month of February, which is considered as the Magh Shukla Purnima, hundreds and hundreds of pilgrims flock towards the Baneshwar Fair. This famous Baneshwar Fair is held at the region where the confluence of the two Dungarpur Rivers takes place. These pilgrims take a dip into the place of confluence of the Som and Mahi rivers of Dungarpur, right before offering their prayers. The pilgrims mostly belong to the community of the Bhils who reside in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujrat, in the Indian sub-continent.
Mahi river, which is one of the famous rivers in Dungarpur, has its origin at the Amoru near the place called Mhow in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The river basin created by the Mahi river is placed in the southern parts of Rajasthan. The various regions over which the Mahi river flows include the districts of Chittorgarh, Banswara, Udaipur and Dungarpur. The three major projects which are located at the Mahi River Basin include the following:
1. Mahi Bajaj Sagar
2. Jakham
3. Jaisamand
Other minor projects situated on the Mahi river basin are mostly related to irrigation.
