Dr. Devi Shetty



Dr Devi Shetty is a well-known philanthropist and perhaps one of the finest cardiac surgeons in India. His full name is Dr Devi Prasad Shetty. He originally hails from the South Kanara District of the Indian state of Karnataka that has been recently split to form Udipi District and Mangalore. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Medicine and completed his Post-Graduate work in general surgery from Kasturba Medical College in Mangalore in 1982.

Dr Devi Shetty did a basic training in Cardiac Surgery at the West Midlands Cardiothoracic Rotation Program. Later, he got appointed at the Guy's Hospital London in the cardiothoracic unit. He served at this London hospital from the year 1983 to the year 1989. Later he went to Kolkata and worked at the BM Birla Hospital before he established the Manipal Heart Foundation- a 450 bed heart operation facility. He has also laid the foundation of the Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences that has been transformed into a fully functional cardiac hospital. It had been constructed on a plot of land that measured 5 acres.

Some of the notable achievements of Dr Devi Shetty are mentioned below:-

  • He was the first surgeon in entire Asia to perform the extremely risky dynamic cardiomyoplasty operation.
  • He had notably reduced the cost of heart surgeries through his package pricing system. Through another unique concept known as assembly line surgery, he targets toward bringing down the mortality rate to almost nil.
  • He does not charge any money for performing operations on children. So far, among the 13000 operations performed by him, 5000 have been on kids.
  • He was the first surgeon of Indian origin to perform the neo-natal open heart surgery.
