People of Mysore



The total population of Mysore is about 22,81,653. There are people from various cultural backgrounds are gathering in this city due to the recent development of the flourishing IT industry here. Thus the population of the Mysore city is a combination of the traditional locals and the modern tech savvy youth gathering here for work, from different corners of India. The most commonly used languages by the people of Mysore include Kannad and English. Tamil and Hindi are the two other popular languages in Mysore.

Most of the people in Mysore city are Hindu by religion. The Christian population in Mysore is also large. Jainism still enjoys a special position in the cultural practices and religious life in Mysore. Certain sections of the population in the city also follow the Sikh, Islamic and Buddhist faith.

Presence of so many important religions in one city makes the culture a vibrant one. The festivals and fairs play an important role in the city life. There are many pilgrim sites around Mysore.

Most of the local people still lead a traditional lifestyle, which is simple and religious. They follow the age old customs and rituals. But with the gradual changes in the economic activities the culture of Mysore is also changing recently.

The residents of Mysore mostly wear traditional Indian clothes. Cotton and silk saris are commonly worn by the women here.

The people of Mysore are very hospitable, simple and jovial. It is because of their nature that the place is considered to be one of the most welcoming urban regions of India.
