The eminent institute of Amritsar was established in the year 1968 and has since its inception provided the students with the best technical education in the field of designing and garment manufacturing.

The Government Institute of Garment Technology in Amritsar is situated near the by-pass at the Majitha Road in the city of Amritsar. The institute is one of the oldest institutes run by government and affiliated to the Punjab State Board of Technical Education. Immediately after India gained independence, the institute was known as the Government Industrial School.

The Government Institute of Garment Technology of Amritsar provides hotel facilities for the outstation girl students. There are provisions for 180 students in the hostel of the the institute. There is no hostel facilities for the boys. The institute has laboratories with facilities of sewing and ironing for the students. The Government Institute of Garment Technology at Amritsar organizes interaction of the students with models and reputed fashion designers to enlighten them with the requirements of the industry.

The two departments of the Government Institute of Garment Technology, Amritsar realized the need for experts in the fashion industry and therefore endeavored in producing designer who are well acquainted with the technical aspects of the industry.
