Ranbir Kapoor Biography
Ranbir Kapoor has made himself very prominent owing to his screen presence and charisma. The 42-year-old is a part of the iconic Kapoor family, which has contributed significantly to our Bollywood industry. His journey went from being a star kid to a celebrated and famous actor, which is a testament to his immense talent and dedication towards his art.
Early Life
Ranbir was born on September 28, 1982, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, to Rishi Kapoor (father) and Neetu Singh (mother). Everyone who knows about Bollywood or follows the industry will be familiar with the entire Kapoor lineage to which he belongs. Ranbir’s parents, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh are also great actors who have, so far spent decades in the industry and have done some great movies.
In addition to this, Ranbir is also the grandson of the legendary actor-director Raj Kapoor and the great-grandson of Prithviraj Kapoor, whose names need no introduction. His birth made him part of the fourth generation of the Kapoor family.
Since his entire family had been a part of the industry, Ranbir was able to receive exposure to the industry at an early age. His education was completed in Bombay Scottish School, where we excelled in sports, more particularly in football. Then he joined the HR College of Commerce and Economics, which was his junior college. Hereafter, he left for New York to get training in acting from the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.
While pursuing his course abroad, Ranbir was also a part of two short films titled ‘Passion to Love’ and ‘India 1964’, which were stepping stones for his journey.
The Bollywood Journey
He completed his courses abroad and returned to India in 2005. His professional experience in the industry was under the guidance of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He was working as an assistant for Bhansali during the production of the movie ‘Black’. This experience allowed him to gain hands-on experience in filmmaking and also solidified his commitment to becoming an actor.
It was Bhansali, who gave Ranbir his first break for his movie ‘Saawariya’, which had Sonam Kapoor and Salman Khan as actors. However, the movie was not well received by the audience, which caused it to be a commercial failure. Albeit, this was Ranbir’s official entry into Bollywood and he was appreciated for his performance in the movie. After this movie, he also starred in Bachna Ae Haseeno, which, although did not fail, wasn’t a commercial success either.
Ranbir becomes a Star
Ranbir received his breakthrough in 2009 when he bagged a role in the movie ‘Wake Up Sid’. The movie became an instant hit at the box office and everyone appreciated Ranbir in the movie. This movie also allowed him to be nominated for awards in the ‘Best Actor’ category, as several award ceremonies had put his name as a potential winner.
He went on to do several movies from thereon, some of which were hits and some of them were not well received by the audience. In 2009, Ranbir starred alongside Katrina Kaif in the movie ‘Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani’, which also became a commercial hit at the box office. These roles resonated with the audience and he was established as a promising talent in the industry.
Ranbir’s acting versatility was also seen in the political drama movie ‘Rajneeti’, which was also a great film and was loved by the audience. Further, in 2011, Ranbir starred in the movie ‘Rockstar’, which was directed by Imtiaz Ali. The movie had a great storyline and good songs, and obviously, Ranbir’s acting was the one to look for. His role was widely acclaimed in the industry and by the audience as well. The actor received the Filmfare Award for ‘Best Actor’. Ranbir’s intense performance in the movie and his dedication to the role made it one of the defining films of his career.
Owing to this success, he further starred in the movie ‘Barfi’, which was released in 2012. In this movie too, he portrayed his brilliant acting skills and he played the role of a jolly man who was deaf and mute. This movie was also very successful and earned the actor praises from all around.
Iconic Roles
During his time in Bollywood, Ranbir has played several roles which have made the audience love his screen presence. He has the ability to play diverse roles, which are sometimes stark opposite to each other. Yet, he delivers every time.
In the movie ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’, released in 2013, the actor played the character of ‘Bunny’. The young audience really resonated with the adventurous lifestyle that was portrayed by his character.
He acted as ‘Ved’ in the movie ‘Tamasha’ released in 2015. Although the movie was not a hit, the character of Ranbir was liked by the audience. He then went on to act as ‘Ayan’ in the iconic movie ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’. Ranbir portrayed unrequited love or one-sided love in an exemplary manner.
He further acted in the movie ‘Sanju’, which was a biography of Sanjay Dutt. The movie released in 2018 earned him the opportunity to earn a Filmfare Award for ‘Best Actor’. The actor portrayed the complex role with such ease that people would have believed him to be the real Sanjay Dutt.
In 2022, the actor starred in the movie ‘Brahmastra: Part One-Shiva’ alongside legendary actors like Amitabh Bachan and Shah Rukh Khan. The movie was fascinating in terms of acting, direction, and its visual appearance. Ranbir received a lot of praise for the way he portrayed his character in the movie.
Most recently, his movie ‘Animal’ was released in 2023, which was a huge success for him but also controversial. His role in the movie was an intense one and it was centred on darker themes. From all these roles that he has played, one thing is clear: he can easily navigate through several genres, allowing him to act in romantic comedies and intense dramas as well.
Personal Life
Apart from acting, Ranbir has an avid interest in football. In pursuance of this interest, he has actively contributed to several initiatives and is also the co-owner of Mumbai City FC. In his leisure time, one may often find him playing football with several actors in our industry at certain designated spots in Mumbai.
In 2022, Ranbir married Alia Bhatt in an intimate ceremony at their Mumbai home. Out of this wedlock, the couple was blessed with a girl named Raha, born in 2022.
