Mukul M Sangma Biography

Dr. Mukul Sangma became the Chief Minister of Meghalaya on April 20, 2010. He is from the Indian National Congress party and was elected from Ampatigre constituency.

Background
Mukul Sangma was born on 20th April 1965 at Chengkompara, Ampati, in the West Garo Hills district in Meghalaya. His father is (late) Shri Binoy Bhushan Marak and his mother is Roshanara Begum. Mukul Sangama was educated in Government High School Ampati and St Anthony’s College Shillong. He studied medicine at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal and passed out in 1989. While in medical college, he was an active member of the youth Congress and also held different positions in the governing body of the Students Council of RIMS.

He worked shortly as a private physician before joining the Government of Meghalaya in1991 as a medical and health officer at Zikzak Public Health center. He resigned from service in 1993 when he joined active politics.

He is active in social work and is the patron of Ampati Youth Welfare Club and the founder member of Miracle Foundation.

He is married to Dikanchi D Shira.

Political Career
In 1993 he contested the Assembly elections as an Independent candidate and was elected to the Meghalaya legislative assembly from Ampatigre constituency. He served as the Chairman of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation.

In 1998 he was appointed the Secretary of the District Congress Committee, West Garo Hills. In 1998 he contested the Assembly elections as an Indian National Congress candidate and was elected. He was made the President of the District Congress Committee in 1999, and in 2000 was made the General Secretary of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee-a post he retains till date.

In 2003, he was reelected to the Legislative Assembly as a Congress candidate. He was appointed as Home and Education Minister by the Chief Minister D D Lapang. In 2005 he was appointed the Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya. He resigned from office, following death by Police firing of agitators against the restructuring of Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education.

He was reelected to the legislative Assembly in 2008. On May 13, 2009 he was again appointed the Deputy Chief Minister in the Congress led alliance of the MUA (Meghalaya United Alliance) by the Chief Minister D D Lapang. DD Lapang resigned on April19 2010 and Mukul Sangma became the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, the following day, which also happened to be his birthday.
