Sushil Kumar Shinde Biography

Sushilkumar Shinde is an Indian politician and the current Minister of Home Affairs in the India Government. He is also the Leader of the Lok Sabha house. Shinde was born on 4th September 1941 in Solapur, Maharashtra and belonged to the scheduled caste.

He completed his college education with a degree in Arts from Dayanand College, Solapur and further studied Law from Shivaji University. Sushilkumar is married to Ujwala S. Shinde and they have three daughters.

Sushilkumar Shinde started his career as a custodian in the Solapur session court. He served the court from 1957 till 1965. Later, he served a as Sub-Inspector of Police, Maharashtra State C.I.D. for six years. In 1971 he was encouraged by Sharad Pawar to quit his sub-inspector’s job and to enter politics, thus began his political career.

Three years later he took part in an assembly by-election from Karmala in Solapur and won by 25,000 votes. Later that year, he was made a junior minister by the late V.P. Naik in his government. He then rejoined the Congress Party and became the finance minister and won the Maharashtra State Assembly elections four times in 1978, 1980, 1985 and 1990.

From 1992 to 1998, Shinde was elected to Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra. He also acted as Sonia Gandhi’s campaign manager in Uttar Pradesh in 1999. From 18 January 2003 to 4 November 2004, He served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra and became the first Scheduled Caste person to hold this post.

In October 2004, Sushilkumar Shinde was appointed as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. He served as the governor from 4 November 2004 before resigning and leaving office on 29 January 2006. On 20 March 2006, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha for second time from Maharashtra.

He also served as the Power Minister of India from 29 January 2006 to 31 July 2012. After Pranab Mukherjee was elected President in 2012, Sushilkumar Shinde became the leader of the Lok Sabha house. On 31 July 2012 Sushilkumar Shinde took office and was appointed as the Minister of Home Affairs.

Sushilkumar Shinde is a recipient of the National Citizen’s Award 1993 and 1994 for his role in the field of Parliamentary Procedure and putting up maximum questions. He also presented nine successive budgets as the Finance Minister of Maharashtra. As a writer, he has written many books in English and Marathi. The most recognized ones are Vichar Ved in Marathi and Vichar Manthan in Hindi.
