Tarun Kumar Gogoi Biography

Tarun Kumar Gogoi assumed the office of the Chief Minister of in May 2011. He was sworn in by the Governor J B Patnaik. This is the third time he has become the Chief Minister of the state. He has served as a Union Minister of State from 1991 to1995 in the 10th Lok Sabha , in the cabinet of the Prime Minister P V Narsimha Rao of Congress.

He has been a member of the Indian National Congress party and was elected on a Congress ticket from Titabar constituency of Assam in 2011. The party won an absolute majority in the elections in the state.

Background
He was born on April 1, 1936 at the Rangajan tea Estate in Jorhat Assam. His father was the late Dr Kamaleshwar Gogoi.
Mr Gogoi studied at Jorhat government boys’ school and went on to graduate from J B College Jorhat. He then did an LLB from Gauhati University. He was a student leader and was the Vice president of the JB College Students Union and the Assam inter college Students Union. He also served as Jt Secretary to the Jorhat Law College union and was a commander of the Student Volunteer Crops.

In 1968 he was elected to the Municipal Board of Jorhat.

He is married to Smt Dolly and they have one son and one daughter.

Political Career
He launched his political career by getting elected as an MP to the 5th Lok Sabha in 1971 from Jorhat Constituency. By 1976 he became the Jt. Secretary to the All India Congress Committee. He was reelected to the 6th and the 7th Lok Sabha in 1977 and 1983, both the times from Jorhat constituency.
In 1985 he became the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee. He served as the President of the Pradesh Congress committee of Assam for four years from 1986 to 1990.

In 1991 he was reelected to the 10th Lok Sabha from Kaliabor. He was then inducted into the Union Cabinet and was given independent charge of two portfolios. He served as the Union Minister of State for Ministry of Food from 1991to 1993, and then Union Minister of state for Ministry of Food processing from 1993 to 1995.

In 1997 he was elected as a Member of the Assam Legislative assembly from Margherita Constituency. After a year in 1998 he was again reelected to the 12th Lok Sabha from Kaliabor constituency, and served on three Lok Sabha committees; Committee on Government Assurances, Committee on External affairs, and the consultative committee Ministry of Petroleum and natural gas.

In 1999 he was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha again from Kaliabor and served as a member of the Lok Sabha Committee on railways from 1999 to 2000.
In May 2001 he became the Chief Minister of Assam. He contested the legislative Assembly elections in September 2001 and was elected as MLA. He remained the chief Minister of Assam for five years. In 2006, again congress won the state elections and Mr Goloi served as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term. He repeated the feat by assuming the office of the Chief Minister for third time by winning the state elections in 2011.
