Venugopal Biography

Dr.Venugopal, the Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), was born on July 6, 1942.

He is a leading heart surgeon of India and is known for his research in stem cells. He carried out India’s first heart transplant on August 3, 1994.

Venugopal has trained hundreds of students in open heart surgery in his career.

He joined AIIMS in 1959 as an undergraduate. He got the title of best undergraduate and received the gold medal from the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He did his post graduation under the guidance of renowned heart surgeon Denton Cooley and won another gold medal.

The first open heart surgery program in India was established by him at AIIMS in 1974. He has been awarded the title of Padma Bhushan in 1998. He is the one who made the Cardio Thoracic and Neuro Sciences Center (CVTS) at AIIMS one of the best in the whole world.
