Shri Bhim Sen Sachar Biography

Shri Bhim Sen Sachar was a freedom fighter and a politician of India. He was born on December 1, 1894. He passed his B.A. and L.L.B. degrees from Lahore and started working as a lawyer in Gujranwala.

Shri Bhim Sen Sachar was elected as the Secretary of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee in 1921. He held the post of Registrar in the National University in Lahore and later he was the Municipal Commissioner of Gujranwala from 1924 to 1933. Influenced by Gandhiji’s Civil Disobedience Movement Shri Bhim Sen Sachar joined the freedom movement. He was jailed for his involvement in the freedom movement from 1930-31. After shifting to Lahore he established the Sunlight Insurance Company.

He was elected as a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly in 1937. He was again imprisoned in 1940 for his involvement in the Civil Disobedience Movement. In the general elections of 1945 he was elected from the Lahore constituency to the Punjab Assembly. In 1947 he was elected from West Punjab as a Member of the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan.

After independence, Shri Bhim Sen Sachar was elected as the Chief Minister of Punjab in 1949. In the general elections of 1952 he was elected from Ludhiana city constituency as the member Punjab Assembly. From 1952-56 he was re-elected as the Chief Minister of Punjab. He was later appointed as the Governor of Orissa from September 1956 to July 1957. From 1959 to 1962 he was the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. During 1964-66 he was assigned as the High Commissioner for India in Ceylon. He was also the Chairman of Guru Nanak Foundation, Punjab and of Khadi Gram Udyog Sangh. This great politician died on 18th January, 1978.

In the series, ‘India’s struggle for Freedom’ the Department of Posts issued a stamp in memory of Shri Bhim Sen Sachar.
