Sundarlal Bahuguna

Noted environmentalist, philosopher and activist Sundarlal Bahuguna is noted for his role in the Chipko movement against the felling of trees in the Himalayas. He is remembered for his slogan, "ecology is permanent economy".

He met the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which resulted in Mrs.Gandhi banning the felling of trees. He, along with his wife, have been working tirelessly to improve the lot of the people residing in the Himalayas.

He has voiced his strong opposistion to the Tehri Dam. A strong believer in Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent means of protest, he has led a life less ordinary helping the simple rural villagers in the Himalayas.

He undertook a 4,870 kms across the Himalayas, in which he realized the tremendous harm that was being done to the environment by the relentless onslaught of deforestation.

He had undertook many fasts demanding that the work on the Tehri Dam be stopped, a dam which has already ousted thousands of people from their homes and hearths.
