Ali Qamar Biography

Ali Qamar: One of the most promising boxing talents of the country, Ali Qamar is the first Indian Boxer to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Although dogged by serious injuries time and again, he is still considered as the brightest prospect of Indian Boxing.

Born to a middle class family, Mohammad Ali Qamar comes from the sports loving city of Kolkata, West Bengal. In 1991, he became the West Bengal Inter-district Boxing champion and there was no looking back after that. From 1991 to 1996, he dominated the state’s boxing scenario. He received his initial boxing lessons at the Kidderpore School of Physical Education in Kolkata and Cheena Bhai was his first coach.

Mohammad Ali Qamar came into the limelight by surprising all to win the gold medal in the 2002 Commonwealth Games at Manchester, England. He defeated Darren Langley of the host country to win the final and create history. Ali Qamar is not contented with his own success only as he provides regular training to young boxers of his club.
