After training hard to perfect his method and bowling technique, he made his debut in the cricketing arena with a memorable performance in the U-19 World Cup held in Bangladesh in 2004 by claiming 8 wickets at a remarkable average of 24.75. Continuing with his excellent form, he chucked another 34 wickets in 6 while playing for Uttar Pradesh in Ranji Trophy later that year.
Making his ODI debut in September 2005, RP Singh Claimed 2 wickets against Zimbabwe in Harare in his debut match itself. He came out with flying colors in the third ODI against Sri Lanka producing the magic figures of 4/35 which not only helped India win the match but also won him his first man of the match award.
Later, though, after remaining out of form with no wickets to his credit RP Singh was forced to stay out of contention for some of the ODIs after the first match of the West Indies Tour in May 2006.
However, in the meantime, Rudra Pratap Singh made his Test debut in the 2nd test match played against Pakistan in Faisalabad, Pakistan in January 2006 with a 5-wicket haul to his credit, which won him Man of the match. RP Singh again displayed the magic of his swing with a memorable 4-wicket haul against Pakistan helped India secure a 3-1 lead in the series and won him another man of the match award as well. He was also a part of Indian ODI squad in the ICC Champions Trophy 2006 but a lackluster form could not help him continue in the side for long.
However, later he was again selected for the Bangladesh and England tours in 2007. Capitalizing on the opportunity, he came up with the figures of 5/59 in a test match against England making up for his first 5-wicket haul in the test cricket arena and claimed 7 wickets at an average of 31.71 in 5 ODIs against England.
RP Singh has time and again proved his worth as a wicket-taking left-arm fast-medium bowler with an amazing ability to produce swing even on seemingly dead tracks, which makes him a key fast bowling option for India with the potential to turnaround matches on his own.
