About

Vijay Mallya is an Indian businessman who is the current chairman of the United Breweries Group. He has been the chairman of Sanofi India as well as Bayer CropSciencein India for more than 20 years.

In a recent interview, Mallya mentioned that he wanted to retire from the position of chairman of Sanofi India. The most popular company of Mallya was Kingfisher which was shut down in 2012 but apart from this, he co-owns the Formula One team Sahara Force India as well.

Mallya’s companies own the I-League teams Mohun Bagan AC and East Bengal FC and Indian Premier League team Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was also a member of Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

He was accused of defaulting on loans in India that were worth crores. On 18 April 2017, he was arrested in London by the Scotland Yard on an extradition warrant by India. However, soon he was granted bail.

Business

Mallya joined his business at quite a young age. He was only 28 when he became the Chairman of the United Breweries Group. There are around 60 companies in this multi-national conglomerate. He focused on the core business of alcoholic beverages and brought out Kingfisher beer which is available in 52 countries of the world.

Eventually, United Spirits Ltd. became the second largest spirits company in the world. In 2012, he surrendered his market control over United Spirits Ltd. to global spirits giant Diageo, retaining a minimum stake in the business.

In 2005, he established Kingfisher Airlines, but he shut it down eventually after not paying salary to the employees for 15 months.

Political Career

Mallya was previously a member of Akhila Bharata Janata Dal but later he joined Janata Party and also held the position of National Working President till 2010.

In 2002 with Congress Party and Janata Dal’s support, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha and an independent member from Karnataka. He was re-elected for a second term in 2010 and this time parties like Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal backed him.

Personal

Vijay Mallya was born on 18 December 1955 to Vittal Mallya (who was the Chairman of the United Breweries Group) and Lalitha Ramaiah. He did his schooling from La Martinière Calcutta, and completed graduation in Commerce from St Xavier’s College, Calcutta, in 1976.

Mallya married Sameera Tyabjee and the couple has a son Siddharth Mallya. However, they divorced shortly. Mallya’s second marriage was to Rekha, his childhood friend. With Rekha he has two biological daughters and one son and two daughters from Rekha’s previous marriages.

Mallya is a follower of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

Awards

  • He received an honorary degree of Doctorate of Philosophy in Business Administration from the Southern California University for Professional Studies in 1997.
  • He received “Officier de la Légion d’Honneur”, a high award of recognition in France.
  • Mallya received “Global leader for tomorrow”, World Economic Forum.
  • He received “Entrepreneur of the Year” award at The Asian Awards in 2010.
