Bipasha Basu Biography

Bipasha Basu, a Begali Hindu, born on 7 January 1979, was a successful model before she joined films. The second of three siblings, she comes from a non film background and has lived and grown up in Delhi and Kolkata, West Bengal. Her modeling career was launched in 1996, when she won two modeling contests – the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel Contest and the Ford Models Supermodel of the World. She then featured in the singer Sonu Nigam’s popular music video- Tu.

Called the Bong Bombshell by the media, this statuesque and dusky beauty with chiseled features is as well- known for her forthright comments and open lifestyle as she is for her popular item numbers. She often makes it to the lists of most desirable women.

Through a bit of initial struggle, she is today a successful and commercially viable lead actress, and with over thirty films to her credit she has been nominated multiple times for Filmfare awards. Bipasha, a self confessed fitness freak, endorses many health brands including Sugarfree and MacVitee biscuits apart from being the face of a jewelry brand.

She debuted in a negative role in Abbas-Mustan directed Ajnabee opposite Akshay Kumar in 2001 and won the Filmfare award for the best female debut. Bipasha then appeared in Vikram Bhatt directed Raaz, a thriller. The success of this film fetched Bipasha a Filmfare best actress nomination and kudos from the film industry, though she went through a low phase with her next films, Mere yaar ki shaadi and Chor machye Shor not faring well at the box office.

The commercial success of the erotic thriller Jism in 2003 established her firmly as a seductive film icon and got her the best villain Filmfare award. After some moderate success and flops of her following films Zameen, Rudrakh and Barsaat in the next two years, Bipasha in 2005 and 2006 had a bouquet of commercial hits. No entry, Corporate, Phir hera Pheri, Omkara and Dhoom 2 were well received and Bipasha appreciated in all her various looks- from the glamorous to the corporate and the rustic. Her item song from Omkara -Beedi jalai le- was a big hit.

Bipasha next had mixed success with her movies Race and Bachna Ae haseeno doing well and Dan dana dan Goal and Aa Dheke Zara flopping. Though best known for her glamorous looks she went off beat, saree clad and.make-up less for Rituparno Ghosh’s Bengali film Shob Charitro kalponik and Priyadarshan’s Hindi film Aakrosh. In Laamhaa she was appreciated for her role as a Kashmiri girl. Her 2011 release Dum maro Dum too was a moderate success.

Bipasha has made a foray into Hollywood by signing Roland Joffe’s Singularity, due for release in 2012.

Bipasha has been open and honest about her relationships. She dated her Raaz co-star Dino Morea for six year before breaking up in 2002. She then dated her Goal co- star, the hunky John Abraham for more than ten year. The very public couple officially broke up in 2011 and either has not disclosed the reason for this break up. She was then briefly linked to her Dum maro Dum co-star Rana Daggubati.
