Shashikala Biography

Shashikala is an actress of Bollywood and has appeared in the movies since 1940`s. She entered the film industry as a child artist. She later became famous for performing supporting roles in films. In her film career she has acted in more than 100 films. She has played a wide variety of characters like a jealous and scheming lover, a simple village girl, mother, grandmother, wicked aunt, landlady and many more.

Some of Shashikala’s films which were mega hits are Phool Aur Patthar (1966), Anupama (1966), Waqt (1965), Humjoli (1970), Neel Kamal (1968), Teen Bahuraniyan (1968), Neend Hamari Khwab Tumhare (1966), Khubsoorat (1980) and more. Nowadays, she is known for her roles as a grandmother in films such as Baadshah (1999), Uljhan (2001), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) and Chori Chori (2003).

Shashikala has worked with the biggest actresses of Bollywood, including Meena Kumari, Nutan, Sharmila Tagore, Mala Sinha, Rekha, Waheeda Rehman, Reena Roy, Shabana Azmi, Tina Munim, Padmini Kolhapuri, Rani Mukherjee etc. In her film career she even co-starred with innumerable popular actors of the Indian Film industry like Ashok Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Jitendra, Mithun Chakravorty, Dharmendra, Rajendra Kumar, Rajesh Khanna.

Shashikala was nominated at the Filmfare awards for Best Supporting actress for the maximum number of eight times. She has won two Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actress for Phani Majumdar’s Aarti in 1962 and B.R.Chopra’s Gumrah in 1963.
