Dr. K. Anji Reddy Biography
Dr. K. Anji Reddy the founder of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories spent his early life in Tadepalli village, Guntur,Andhra Pradesh. His father was a peasant and grew turmeric. After completing his schooling from the local high school,
Dr. Reddy pursued his graduation in science in the year 1958 from the A.C College in Guntur City. He also pursued B.Sc. in Pharmaceuticals and Fine chemicals from the Bombay University. Thereafter he obtained a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune.
Dr. Reddy started his career working for the state owned Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited. He was the founder managing director of Uniloids Ltd and worked there from 1976 to 1980 and Standard Organics Limited where he worked from 1980 to 1984. In the year 1984, Dr. K. Anji Reddy laid the foundation of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. The company established new standards in the Indian Pharmaceutical industry and transformed the Indian bulk drug dependency of the mid-80s into a self-sufficient industry in the mid-90s. Finally the Indian Pharmaceutical industry developed into an export-oriented industry and ever since continues to remain the same.
In the year 1993, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories emerged as India’s first drug discovering company and on April 2001 it was the first non-Japanese, Asian pharmaceutical company which was listed on New York Stock Exchange.
Dr.Reddy is an active member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Trade & Industry. He has also been nominated to the board of National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER).
A generous donor Dr. K. Anji Reddy has also founded the Dr. Reddy’s Foundation for Human & Social Development, which works as a medium to bring about change in order to prop up development.
In his huge career Dr. K. Anji Reddy has been the recipient of many awards and civic honors. These include:

- FAPA-Ishidate Award for Pharmaceutical Research in 1998
- Businessman of the Year in 2001
- Achiever of the Year Award, 2000
