Dingko Singh Biography

Dingko Singh is one of the greatest boxers in the history of Indian Boxing, Dingko Singh is the winner of an Asian Games gold medal. He has also won several other national and international boxing championships.

Dingko’s rise to success can be an inspiring story for any aspiring sportsman. He was born in Lamalong, Manipur. His birthplace is a very remote area of the hilly state. Born to a very poor family, Dingko Singh had to stay at an orphanage before coaches from SAI – Sports Authority of India spotted him and picked him up under the Special Area Games scheme. He soon proved himself by winning the sub-junior national boxing championships. He was only 11 years old when he won the championships at Ambala in 1989.

He tasted his first international success in 1997 when he won the King’s Cup in Bangkok. In Thailand, he was adjudged the best boxer of the tournament. It is in the same venue that he won Asiad gold medal in the 1998 Bangkok Games. He outclassed Timur Tulyakov to win in the 54 kilogram Bantamweight category. On the way to the final, he defeated Wongprates Sontaya of the host country. He was honored with the Arjuna Award in the same year.
