KM Beenamol Biography

KM Beenamol was a gold medalist of the 2002 Asian Games, achieved the prestigious feat of reaching the Olympic semi-final in 2000. After P.T. Usha, she became the second Indian women to qualify for the semi-finals in her favorite event – 800 meters.

She and her brother, K.M. Binu, have created another envious record. They are the first siblings in Indian sports arena to win medals at the same international competition. They won medals at the 2002 Busan Asian Games. While K.M. Beenamol or Kalayathumkuzi Mathews Beenamol won the women’s 800 meters gold, her brother won the bronze medal in the men’s event.

Hailing from the state of Kerala, Beenamol was born on 15th August, 1975. Apart from her international successes, she has always been a consistent performer in the national circuit.

Beenamol proved herself as the surprise package of the Indian Athletics team in the 2000 Olympics in Sidney, Australia when she won the 800 meters heats and qualified for the semi-finals.

Along with ace shooter – Anjali Bhagwat, K.M.Beenamol was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for the year 2002-03. She was further honored with the Padma Shree in the following year. She represents Railways in the national championships. Beenamol has also won the prestigious Arjuna Award.
