Syed Kirmani Biography

Syed Mujtaba Hussain Kirmani or Syed Kirmani as he was better known was born on December 29, 1949 in Madras or present-day Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Regarded as India's finest wicketkeeper till date, he started off as an understudy to Farokh Engineer during India's tours to England in 1971 and 1974 and in the 1975 Cricket World Cup.
He made his debut against New Zealand in 1976 and in his second Test, he shot into the limelight when he equaled the world record of six victims in an innings.

During New Zealand's tour to India next year, Kirmani performed wonderfully with the bat. Kirmani was dropped for the 1979 Cricket World Cup and the subsequent tour to England. He was called back into the team for the series against Australia in 1979-80. Kirmani bagged the best wicket keeper award in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. Though Kirmani was dropped once again, he made a comeback into the Indian team for the Australian tour of 1985-86.

While taking a catch to dismiss Allan Border in a World Series Cup match, Kirmani was injured which forced him to sit out of the remaining matches of the tournament, which for all practical purposes ended his international career. He later played for Railways in the domestic circuit and for Karnataka. He has also acted in a Bollywood movie, Kabhi Ajnabhi The. He played a very crucial role in India's World Cup triumph in 1983. Kirmani scored a total of 2759 runs in 88 test matches with a highest score of 102, while he scored a total of 373 runs in 49 One-day International matches with a highest score of 48.
