Vijay Amritraj Biography
Vijay Amritraj has reigned as one of the premier tennis players in Asia for over two decades. Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on 14th December,1953 the sport star has against the top stars like Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl, Often appearing in the commentary box for Fox Sports and ESPN Star Sports,
Vijay Amritraj has topped the charts of sport personalities in Asia for 14 years. He has participated in Wimbledon 17 times. He reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 1973 and 1981. Amritraj has represented India in the Davis Cup on 20 different occasions. He qualified in the finals twice in 1974 and 1987 in the Davis Cup.
To acknowledge his contribution towards sports, the Indian Government has awarded him the Padma Shri Award, which is one of the prestigious honors of the country. Vijay Amritraj is also the recipient of the Key to the City of Los Angeles and the Pierre de Coubertin Awards. To nurture the young talents of lawn tennis in India, Vijay Amritraj has set up the Britannia Amritraj Tennis Academy in Chennai, his birth place. He has also been nominated five times to spearhead the ATP Tour Players Council as President. He is also reputed for his performance in the James Bond movie, Octopussy.
