Major Political Parties in Bihar
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD):
The RJD is a political party that is largely based in Bihar. It was founded by Lalu Prasad Yadav in 1997 after he was evicted from Janata Dal. Along with Lalu, Kanti Singh, Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, 17 Lok Sabha MPs and eight Rajya Sabha members together formed the RJD. The party is supported by the Muslims and Yadavs who form the majority of the population of the state. The basic ideologies followed by the party include values of social justice, secularism, and equality. Lalu Prasad Yadav is the chairperson as well as the leader of the party in Lok Sabha. The election symbol of the party is lantern.
Janata Dal (United) (JD (U)):
The JD (U) is considered to be the centre-left political party and has a strong political base in Bihar. The current form of the party came into being with a merger of the Janata Dal, the Samata Party, and the Lok Shakti Party on 30 October 2003. The JD (U) had a 17-year-old alliance with the BJP and had been an important component of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). However, the alliance was broken after Narendra Modi was made the head of the campaign committee for general elections 2014. The three ideologies of Janata Dal (United) are secularism, socialism and integral humanism. Sharad Yadav is the chairperson of the party. The JD (U)'s election symbol is an arrow.
Indian National Congress:
The Bihar unit of the Indian National Congress is called Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC) and is headquartered at Sadaqat Ashram in Patna, Bihar. Currently, Ashok Choudhary is the president of BPCC. BPCC has many frontal organisations such as the Bihar Pradesh Youth Congress (BPYC), Bihar Pradesh Congress Seva Dal (BPCSD), Bihar Pradesh Congress INTUC and the Bihar Pradesh Congress NSUI. The election symbol of the INC is palm.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP):
The BJP has considerable strength in Bihar, which is among some of those states where the Narendra Modi factor has worked. Bihar BJP's state president is Mangal Pandey. The frontal organisations of the BJP are the Kisan Morcha, the Minority Morcha, Bharatiya Janata Mazdoor Morcha, the Mahila Morcha, the S.C. Morcha, the S.T. Morcha and the Yuva Morcha.
Lok Jan Shakti Party:
Founded in 2000, Lok Jan Shakti Party is headed by Ram Vilas Paswan who formed the party after a split from JD (U). The party is currently a member of National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The LJSP has a following among the Dalits in the state.

Bharatiya Jan Congress:
BJC is a party run by the former chief minister of Bihar, Jagannath Mishra. The party was active in Bihar during 1999-2001.
Bihar People's Party: BPP is a political party formed by Anand Mohan, a leader of the Samajwadi Krantikari Sena and Janata Dal.
Bihar Vikas Party:
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Janardan Yadav founded the party in 1999.
Kisan Vikas Party:
A small party in Bihar, it was formed as a splinter group from the Communist Party of India.
Rashtrawadi Kisan Sangathan:
It was founded by Brahmeshwar Singh, the founder of the Ranvir Sena.
Samajwadi Krantikari Sena:
The party was founded by Anand Mohan Singh in 1980. The primary objective of the party was to fight against the reservation quotas for lower casts.
Sampurna Vikas Dal:
On 20 October 2003, Ranjan Prasad Yadav formed the party.
