Universities in Kerala
According to the 2011 Census, the literacy level of Kerala was 94 percent. Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDPY), Nair Service Society and the Muslim Education Society (MES) have made significant contributions to the growth and development of education in the state. Not only school education but also university-level education is at par in Kerala. With high literacy rate, it is also home to many higher education institutions. The Central University of Kerala is one of the 15 new Central Universities established under The Central Universities Act, 2009 (Act No.25 of 2009) offering courses in science, fine arts and literature. There are many state and deemed universities in the state and it also houses some of the institutions of national importance.
Universities in Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram can be called the educational centre of the state. The University of Kerala, the oldest university of the state, is located in Thiruvananthapuram. The region houses many other professional colleges that include medical colleges, engineering colleges and law colleges. There are also few Ayurveda and homeopathy colleges in the region. Trivandrum Medical College, which is a premier health centre in Kerala, has been upgraded to the status of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, which is one of its kinds, is also located here. The Kerala Technological University that imparts education in management, engineering and technology is also situated here.
The region has two main universities - Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University and the University of Calicut. There is a proposal by the state government to establish two more universities - Ayurveda University and English and Foreign Language University.
Universities in Thrissur
Kerala University of Health Sciences that offers courses in medical paramedical and health sciences is located in Thrissur. Another university in this area is the Kerala Agriculture University offering programmes in engineering and agriculture.
