1958 Commonwealth Games


The 1958 Commonwealth Games was one of the largest sporting events. Known as the 1958 British Empire Games, the event was organized in Cardiff in South Wales. Cardiff is the smallest country in the history of Commonwealth Games to host the Commonwealth Games. The 1958 Commonwealth Games started in Cardiff on 18 July, 1958 and continued till 26 July,1958. Delhi, in India, will host the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The 1958 Commonwealth Games were attended by approximately 1,130 athletes. Moreover, 228 officials were also part of the sports event. From the famous Buckingham Palace, Chris Chattaway together with Roger Bannister carried the Queen's Baton to Wales.

Countries like Singapore, Kenya and Ghana took part in the Commonwealth Games for the first time. The names of the countries which participated in 1958 Commonwealth Games are Australia, British Guiana, North Borneo, Uganda, Barbados, Bahamas, Isle of Man, Hong Kong, Brunei, Canada, Ghana, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Northern Rhodesia, South Africa, India, Ceylon, Jamaica, Dominica, St Vincent, England, Nigeria and Malaya. Medals:

England won the highest number of medals in the 1958 Commonwealth Games with 29 gold, 22 silver and 29 bronze. Australia was at the second position with 27 gold, 22 silver and 17 bronze and South Africa bagged the third position with 13 gold, 10 silver and 8 bronze.
