Commonwealth Games 1998


The Malaysian city of Kuala Lumpur hosted the 16th Commonwealth Games (September 11-September 21, 1998), for the first time in the history of Asia. The slogan for Commonwealth Games 1998 was "Bersama-sama gemilangkannya" ("Together we'll glorify this moment").

Opening Ceremony

Opened by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Jaafar ibni Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman, His Majesty the King of Malaysia, the Commonwealth Games 1998 was memorable in every aspect.

Logo and Official Mascot

The logo for Commonwealth Games 1998 was the Hibiscus, the national flower of Malaysia and the official mascot was Wira the orang utan.

Participating Nations

5,065 athletes and officials from 70 nations took part in the Commonwealth Games, 1998 and 34 nations among them bagged medals.

Events

The sports featured in Commonwealth Games 1998 were Athletics, Aquatics (diving, swimming and synchronized swimming), Badminton, Boxing, Cricket, Cycling, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby 7's, Shooting, Squash, Tenpin Bowling and Weightlifting.

Cricket, Hockey, Netball and Rugby - 7's were introduced for the first time in the Commonwealth Games.

Main Venues

The major venues for Commonwealth Games 1998 were the National Sports Complex, Bukit Jalil and Bukit Kiara Sports Complex.

Results

Australia, with 198 medals (80 Gold, 61 Silver and 57 Bronze), took the 1st position while England came 2nd with 136 medals and Canada stood 3rd with 99 medals. The host country Malaysia, bagging 10 gold medals secured the 4th position.

Closing Ceremony

After the dazzling performance of Celine Dion and Rod Stewart, the closing ceremony of Commonwealth Games 1998 was officiated by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Head of the Commonwealth and Patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation.
