1990 Commonwealth Games


The city of Auckland in New Zealand organized the 14th Commonwealth Games. The 1990 Commonwealth Games were held from 24th January 1990 to 3rd February 1990. Mt Smart Stadium was the main stadium for this multi-sport event. Goldie, the Kiwi bird, was the official mascot of the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Held every 4 years, the 2010 Commonwealth Games will be hosted in Delhi.

In 1990 Commonwealth Games 10 different sports were featured. They include:
  • Badminton
  • Boxing
  • Cycling
  • Shooting
  • Gymnastics
  • Judo
  • Lawn bowls
  • Athletics
  • Weightlifting
  • Aquatics
Inaugural ceremony of 1990 Commonwealth Games:

The inaugural ceremony of the 1990 Commonwealth Games started with great pomp and glory. Several activities like arrival of the Queen's Baton took place during the course of the event. The Auckland Commonwealth Games Choir sang the Song of Welcome when Prince Edward entered the stadium.

God Defend New Zealand, which is the National Anthem of New Zealand, was also sung during the 14 gun salute. After this, Prince Edward took the Guard of honor. The participating nations then introduced themselves to the world.

New Zealanders then performed the Maori story. In this event they depicted the story of how New Zealand came into existence. Logan Breha organized this Maori story.

To entertain the audience dance performances were also organized. Traditional dances from countries like Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Austria were also arranged during the opening function of the Commonwealth Games. With the singing of the game's motto the inaugural ceremony came to an end.

Participating Teams of 1990 Commonwealth Games:

As many as 55 countries from various parts of the world sent their athletes to this sport event. Approximately 2,826 athletes and officials took part in the Auckland Games. Some of the countries which participated in 1990 Commonwealth Games include Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, Jamaica, Bangladesh, Northern Ireland, Bahamas, Isle of Man, Nigeria and Bermuda .

Medals:

In total 29 countries succeeded in winning medals. The medal table was topped by Australia with 52 gold, 54 silver and 58 bronze. England claimed the second rank with 47 gold, 40 silver and 43 bronze. Canada secured the third position with 35 gold, 43 silver and 38 bronze.
