Union Public Service Commission



Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is also known as the Federal Public Service Commission. It is basically a constitutional body, which looks after the recruitment of people for various services of the Union. The Union Public Service Commission conducts different examinations about which prior notices are given in the leading newspapers of the country. According to the Constitution of India, there has to be a Union Public Service Commission and a State Public Service Commission. The first Public Service Commission was established in the year 1926, on 1ist of October. Later, as per the Government of India Act 1935, the Federal Public Service Commission was set up in the country.

The President of India appoints the chairman as well as other members of the Union Public Service Commission, India in which, half of the members are Civil Servants. The appointment as well as the removal of the members of the Union Public Service Commission in India entirely depends on the President of the nation.

Some of the important functions of the Union Public Service Commission are listed below:

  • Recruitment for different services as well as posts under the Union, through various competitive examinations
  • Miscellaneous matters that are related to the grant of reimbursement of legal expenses and the extra ordinary pensions
  • Advising government of the country on matters related to the methods of Recruitment
  • Advising on the suitableness of officers for promotion and transfer-on-deputation
  • Recruitment of services and posts for the Central Government through various interviews
  • Disciplinary cases that are related to various civil services.

  • Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Examination.


Being an independent office of the Government of India, UPSC conducts examinations to recruit candidates in three different ways. These are transfer, promotion and direct recruitment. The various recruitment processes are followed by written examination, interview and screening test.
