Election History
The Indian National Congress has been the most dominant political party in Lakshadweep, and has won the constituency ten out of twelve times. The first Lok Sabha elections to be held in Lakshadweep were the 1967 elections. P M Sayeed contested and won as an independent candidate. He joined the INC and went on to win every election from 1971 elections to 1999 elections. In the 2004 elections however, this dominance of INC was successfully challenged by the Janata Dal (United). But, INC bounced back in the 2009 elections, and reclaimed the Lakshadweep constituency. At present it is the most powerful party in the state, with Muhammed Hamdullah Sayeed of INC as the UT's member to the Lok Sabha.
