About Maharashtra

Home to India's financial hub, Mumbai the state of Maharashtra was formed on 1 May 1960. A perfect blend of tradition and modernity, Maharashtra has been a significant contributor to the country's overall growth.

The state is the second most populous state of India. From the Konkan range and the Western Ghats, to the Deccan land, Maharashtra has a compelling range of physical diversity. Agriculture is one of the biggest revenue generators for the state. However, in the recent past, inconsistent rains have affected the state majorly, leading to a deficit of crops like sugarcane and rice. On the brighter side, the state's mineral and power resources, along with its cotton textile manufacturing have brought profitable gains.

Member Representation at the Centre

The state sends 48 members to the Lok Sabha and 19 members to the Rajya Sabha. The state votes for both the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assembly this year, as the current government's term will end on 7 December 2014.

Ruling Party and the Constitution

Though the Governor is the constitutional head of the state, the real executive powers lie in the hands of the Chief Minister and the Cabinet. The current Governor of Maharashtra is Kateekal Sankaranarayanan. The incumbent Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, representing the Congress party, has ruled the roost in the state since 11 November 2010.

Election History

After its inauguration as a state in 1960, Maharashtra has been under the Congress stronghold. Though the state has been under the President's rule only once in 1980, fierce political rivalry has prevailed between the Congress and the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance. The first Chief Minister of Maharashtra was Yashwantrao Chavan, who led the Congress government in the state. The INC continued to govern the state till 1978. The same year, Sharad Pawar's Progressive Democratic Front made inroads, and managed the state for a couple of years. The Congress, however, made a comeback in 1980, after Maharashtra saw a brief stint of President's rule. It took a resounding effort from Shiv Sena in 1995, to break away from the Congress governance. The party ruled till 1999, before Congress took over the mantle again. Since then, Congress has been in power in the state.

In the previous state assembly elections, the INC won 82 seats, the NCP 62 seats, the BJP 46 seats out of the 288 seats. The rest were bagged by MNS, independents and other regional parties. Congress elected Ashok Chavan as the Chief Minister of the state. However, in 2010 he was forced to resign after he was indicted in the Aadarsh Housing scam. Since then, Prithviraj Chavan has been leading the party in the state.

Maharashtra has so far witnessed 15 Lok Sabha elections starting from 1951. The INC has been at its best in the state giving away a win at the hands of the Janata Party in 1977, BJP in 1996 and 1999. In the last General Elections, the Congress along with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) bagged a total of 25 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with the Shiv Sena clinched 20 seats.

Political Parties
  • Indian National Congress (INC) : The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee is a wing of the INC for the state. The current President of the party is Manikrao Thakre. Being the single largest political party in the state, the MPCC carries forward the ideology that focuses on overall social and economic development.

  • Nationalist Congress Party (NCP): The Sharad Pawar-led party has strong functioning units all across the country. In the current Union Cabinet, Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel hold the position of Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Heavy Industries.

  • Shiv Sena (SS) : Found by Bal Thackeray in 1966, Shiv Sena was formed basically to work in the favour of Maharashtrians in the state. Currently headed by Uddhav Thackeray, the party has aligned itself with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

  • Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) : The Maharashtrian Nationalist party was founded in 2006 by Raj Thackeray, after he quit the Shiv Sena over differences with Uddhav Thackeray.
