Arunachal Pradesh Lok Sabha Elections 2014

Situated in the north eastern part of India, Arunachal Pradesh is also known as the 'Land of the Rising Sun'. It is spread across 83,743 sq km in area and is bordered by the states of Assam and Nagaland to the south.

It also shares international borders with Bhutan in the west, China to the north and northeast and Myanmar to the east. When India attained independence, Arunachal Pradesh was part of the North East Frontier Agency (NEFA), which later went onto become a Union Territory in 1972. It is only in February 1987, that A P became a full-fledged state, the 25th state of India. Owing to the major area in Arunachal Pradesh that shares international borders, especially with China, elections hold great political significance.

Representation of Arunachal Pradesh at The Centre

Arunachal sends one Member of Parliament (MP) to Rajya Sabha and two MPs to Lok Sabha to represent the state at the Centre. The State Legislative Assembly consists of 60 members.

Election History

The First Assembly Election was held in 1978 with Janata Party emerging as the winner. Prem Khandu Thungan was nominated as the Chief Minister. In 1980, the Second Assembly Election saw the emergence of Indian National Congress Party with Geong Apang as the CM. The Congress party went on to win the 1984, 1990, 1995, 1999, 2004 and 2009 assembly elections, with Geong Apang as the Chief Minister. In 2007, Apang had to step down following pressure from other MLAs to resign, being replaced by Dorjee Khandu until 2009. However, due to Khandu's untimely demise in 2011 in a helicopter crash, Jarbom Gamlin was in charge from May till October 2011. Then, Nabam Tuki became the Chief Minister in November 2011 and still continues to do so.

The Lok Sabha elections are being held since 1977 in Arunachal Pradesh. In the Sixth Lok Sabha elections held in 1977, the Indian National Congress was the winning party. The Congress continued to be the winning party in the 1980, 1984, 1989, and 1991 Lok Sabha elections. In 1996 elections, an Independent candidate emerged victorious, followed by Arunachal Congress in the Twelfth Lok Sabha Elections held in 1998. In 1999, the Indian National Congress won the Thirteenth Lok Sabha Elections. In the Fourteenth LS polls held in 2004, the National Democratic Alliance (BJP) emerged as the winning party. In the 15th Lok Sabha elections held in 2009, it was the United Progressive Alliance (Indian National Congress) that emerged victorious.

Current Constitution of the State Government

The current State Legislative Assembly consists of four political parties:
  • Indian National Congress consisting of 55 members,
  • Bharatiya Janata Party consisting of 3 members,
  • All India Trinamool Congress consisting of one member, and
  • Independent consisting of one member.
Major Political Parties

Arunachal Pradesh has regional as well as national parties. The national parties include Indian National Congress, All India Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party.

Over the years, couple of regional parties have emerged due to various ethnic conflicts and tensions.

  • People’s Party of Arunachal was formed in 1977.
  • Arunachal Congress (AC) is another regional party which came into being in 1996, when the then Chief Minister and a Congress leader, Gegong Apang, revolted against veteran Congress leader P V Narasimha Rao.
  • In 1998, there was an inner revolt in AC and it split, giving birth to Arunachal Pradesh (Mithi) – AC(M).
  • The year 2003 saw revolt within Indian National Congress leading to the formation of Congress (Dolo).
