Summary of Karnataka Election 2014

The single-day polling in Karnataka registered 67.28 % turnout on 17 April 2014. Total 434 candidates were fielded in the general election of 2014 for the 28 parliamentary constituencies of Karnataka. As per media reports, 68.70% and 65.81% was the polling percentage of male and female voters, respectively.

Turnout in Bangalore

56.47% of 13,55,372 electors of Bangalore North practiced their franchise on the polling day, while in Bangalore South, 55.69% electors turned up to ballot. In Bangalore Rural and Central, 68.80% and 55.70% polling was recorded, respectively.

Participation of Women

As per media reports, 65.81% of 22.6 million women electors in the state got inked in this general poll. This was the highest-ever polling percentage of female voters in a Lok Sabha election in the state.

Participation of 'Third Gender'

In the final electoral roll of the Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka, the number of eligible voters in "others" (third gender) category was 3,957. However, just 160 voters cast their ballot on the polling day.

Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT)

This election season, the voters of the Bangalore South constituency used Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail while casting their vote. The Election Commission (EC), for the first time, installed VVPAT devices in 1,926 polling stations of Bangalore South. To make the voters familiar with the machine and its usage, provisions were made by the EC to give demos on VVPAT machine to the voters a few days before the election. The machine is designed to print the name of the party with its symbol, as and when a voter presses his choice on the EVM. However, the machine preserves the print instead of releasing it.

Total turnout: 67.28 % (28 seats)
