The Union Territory of Puducherry is made up of the former French colonies of Yanam, Mahe, Karaikal, and Puducherry. Mahe and Yanam are surrounded by the states of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, whereas the territories of Puducherry and Karaikal are surrounded by the state of Tamilnadu.

2019 Election History


On April 18, 2019, Puducherry held its general election. The National Democratic Alliance fielded Dr. K. Narayanasamy, a candidate for the AINRC, while the UPA fielded V. Vaithilingam of the Indian National Congress.

The Puducherry Lok Sabha constituency encompasses the whole Union Territory. Following the enactment of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Indian Constitution in 1962, Pondicherry became a union territory. In 2006, it was renamed Puducherry. Thirumudi N. Sethuraman of the Indian National Congress was the first member of parliament (MP) elected from this seat when it had its maiden elections in 1967.

Major Political Parties Competing in the 2024 Elections


Formerly known as Pondicherry, Puducherry was acknowledged as a parliamentary constituency following the passage of the 14th amendment to the Indian Constitution. Its name was formally changed to Puducherry in 2006. There are thirty assembly seats in the Puducherry Lok Sabha constituency. According to the 2011 census, there were about 250,000 people living there. Puducherry is well known for being a well-liked travel destination that draws tourists from all over the world. In terms of legislative history, the Congress party won the first Lok Sabha elections in Puducherry, which took place in 1967. In 1971, the Congress maintained its winning record. On the other hand, the AIADMK achieved its first triumph in 1977.

AIADMK: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, often known as the All India Anna Dravidian Progressive Federation (AIADMK), is a prominent regional political party in Tamil Nadu and the Puducherry union territory.

BJP: Along with the Indian National Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party is one of the two largest political parties in India.

INC: The Indian National Congress (INC), also known as the Congress Party or just the Congress, is a well-established political organization throughout the majority of India's provinces. It was the first modern nationalist movement to arise in Asia and Africa under the British Empire, having been founded on December 28, 1885.

NTK: The "We Tamils" party was founded in 1958 by Indian politician S. P. Adithanar, who supported the notion of establishing an independent Tamil state. The party was in favor of combining Tamil-speaking regions of India and Sri Lanka to form a Greater Tamil Nadu.
