Formed on 1 November 2000, Chhattisgarh is the 26th state of India. It is the 10th largest and the 16th most populated state. It is rich in forest resources and is famous for its cement and steel plants, and rice mills.
The state was initially a part of Madhya Pradesh. When, 16 districts speaking Chattisgarhi dialect came together with a demand for a new state, Chhattisgarh was born. The state is surrounded by Madhya Pradesh to the west, Maharashtra to the south-west, Andhra Pradesh to the south-east and south, Uttar Pradesh to the north, Jharkhand to the northeast and Orissa to the east. Raipur is the capital city of the state.
Representation at the Centre
The Chhattisgarh State Legislative Assembly is unicameral in nature and comprises of 90 seats. In the Lok Sabha, 11 members represent the state, and five Members of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha.
Election History
The first State Assembly elections were held in 2000. The Indian National Congress (INC) was the winning party and Ajit Jogi was nominated as the Chief Minister. In the second, third and the fourth elections held in 2003, 2008 and 2013 respectively, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the winning party. Bhupesh Baghel became the Chief Minister in December 2018 and has been holding this post ever since.
The 14th Lok Sabha elections were held in 2004 in the state. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP came together to form the government. In the 15th Lok Sabha elections held in 2009, the BJP-led NDA emerged as the winning party again. BJP also won in the 16th Lok Sabha elections.
