In Lok Sabha general elections 2019 Jharkhand has a unicameral government with 82 members, where 81 are elected and one is nominated by the Governor. The state represents 14 seats in the Lok Sabha and six seats in the Rajya Sabha. Of the 14 Lok Sabha seats, five are reserved for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates, and one is reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidate.
The people of Jharkhand have over the years expressed the need for better governance in the state, a permanent solution to the rising issues of Naxalism, better education and health infrastructure.
Ruling Party and the Constitution
Though the Governor is the constitutional head of the state, the real executive powers lie in the hands of the Chief Minister and the Cabinet. The current Governor of Jharkhand is Draupadi Murmu, who was elected on 18 May 2015. The incumbent Chief Minister Raghubar Das, representing the BJP, has ruled the state since 28th December 2014.
Election History
Since its creation in 2000, the state of Jharkhand election updates has witnessed a lot of political volatility. Three State Assembly Elections have taken place till date with the BJP and JMM dominating the political circuit. The first Assembly Elections saw the BJP govern the state and gave two chief ministers in two years, Babulal Marandi and Arjun Munda. The next elections in 2005, saw the BJP and JMM align till September 2006.
The 17th Lok Sabha elections will be the state's third parliamentary polls. The 2004 Lok Sabha election saw the INC bag six seats at the Centre, with the JMM at a close second with four seats. The BJP bagged only one seat. In 2009, fortunes turned for the BJP, which clinched eight seats. During 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP party won 12 seats in the state.
Political Parties
Politics in Jharkhand is dominated by the Indian National Congress (INC), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
- Jharkhand Mukti Morcha : Led by Shibu Soren, JMM is an influential party not only in Jharkhand but in neighbouring states as well. The party, which was earlier aligned along with the BJP, is currently presided over by Wasim Akram Khan. Hemant Soren, the present Chief Minister of Jharkhand, belongs to the JMM.
- Bharatiya Janata Party: Currently presided over by Shri Laxman Gilua, the BJP's state unit in Jharkhand has been in and out of power since the state's formation in 2014. Arjun Munda has led the party in the state on three occasions. Also Ravindra Kumar Rai led the party till 2014.
- Indian National Congress: The Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee is a wing of the Indian National Congress in the state. Led by Sukdev Bhagat, the party aims to make a mark in the state .
